In 2017 a regular architects' inspection found that there was significant deterioration of the Tower and Spire which would need major works. After further inspection the building was placed on the 'Heritage At Risk' Register by English Heritage. Since then our Project Team have been working to ensure that the work would be done in a way which does justice to its beauty and Grade II listed status, and which would be affordable. Thanks in large part to a generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and players of the Lottery, we were able to see the project through successfully without completely exhausting the church's financial reserves. We also received substantial grants from the H. B. Allen Trust and Allchurches Trust. The refurbishment of the tower was completed in January 2020 and the last levels of scaffolding were gone by early February. The church tower and spire are now safe and secure, and will continue to be a magnificent feature of the Surbiton skyline for many years to come. The church has a new maintenance schedule which should ensure that the stonework remains in good condition.
